When I finally answered the question, "What do I want to be when I grow up?" (which ironically had the same answer I was giving people when I was 7), I was focused and excited and running around like a mad-woman trying to see it all and meet everyone. I made lists upon lists of things to do. I planned for the future and I planned for each day. I woke up early and went to bed late, with nothing but art or art-related activities in between. I was happy all the time, every day. It was frikkin' awesome.
Without warning, I began falling into the downswing. You know what that is (I hope). After a period of feeling pretty stoked on how things are going, and your inside voice was cheering "YOU CAN DO IT!!" much louder than "I'm not so sure about that," a shift begins.
Ahhh...that stupid downswing. Ideas aren't as keen to reveal themselves. Worry creeps in. And doubt gets louder and louder. That stupid downswing where you may be doing the exact same thing that had you flying high yesterday, however today has you questioning yourself. That stupid downswing where your "YOU CAN DO IT!!" voice is getting tired of yelling so loud so your "I'm not so sure about that" voice is excited about pushing it aside and getting the chance to be heard. That stupid downswing where feeling bold turns to feeling awkward, and feeling confident turns to being self-conscious. *sigh*
The one good thing about the downswing for me is that I know, once it has started, I'm that much closer to it moving back upwards. In the meantime, I need to remind myself of that one thing I keep telling you guys, "Life is too fucking short!" and it is certainly too short not to kick, scream, and scratch my way back up. So today, I will just create and do the best I can to listen to my "YOU CAN DO IT!!" voice even if it has just become a whisper.
What about you guys?? I'm under the assumption that I'm not alone here. What are the tools you use to pull yourself up during a downswing? Perhaps there are hidden benefits I need to embrace that I haven't noticed yet but you have. Please share if that's the case!
